Carol Service ⛪

The school community of Ballyheerin enjoyed a beautiful carol service today in Leatbeg church. All the children sang carols and the senior class accompanied the singing with an array of instruments such as tin-whistles, piano, fiddle, piano accordion and Bodhráns. Thank you to Reverend David and the church members who provided refreshments afterwards. It was the perfect way for the children end our first school term and begin our Christmas Holidays.

Alice in Wonderland 🎄

The children of Ballyheerin NS brought the story of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ to the stage today. Every child gave an excellent performance and their teachers and families are so proud! Múinteoir Gráinne created the perfect backdrop for the occasion which the children helped her to paint. Everybody sang Christmas carols after the performance. Kerri, Aaron, Róisín and Abby played piano, piano accordion, fiddle and triangle. We would like to thank the Parents Association for providing refreshments for everyone after the show.

Christmas Pantomime

Both the junior and senior class travelled to the Millennium Forum in Derry to see the Pantomime ‘Snow White and the seven dwarves’. According to our veteran sixth class, ‘it was the best one yet’.

It was a fantastic day out for all and we have high expectations for next year!

Ballyheerin Bodhrán players!

The senior class have been learning the Bodhrán in recent weeks. We were recently thrilled to welcome the renowned musician, Jim Woods to our school. Jim did an amazing bodhrán workshop to both the junior and senior class. The children how to play some the Bodhrán for traditional jigs and polkas as well as how to play the Bodhrán for modern songs such as ‘Shotgun’ and ‘We will rock you’. Such fun!!

Feliz Navidad!

Our pupils from 2nd to 6th class have embarked on a penpal program with Chester College International School, Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

We have been busy learning about the lives of our new pen-pals as well as the language culture and history of Spain. There was great excitement in our school last week when we received letters in the post from Spain! We quickly responded with their own. We learnt how to say ‘Happy Christmas’ (Feliz Navidad) and we even made Christmas cards for each of our pen-pals.

Book Fair and Afternoon Tea!

Ballyheerin National school’s annual book fair is well and truly underway 🙂

The children are enjoying book shopping and browsing through the lovely books we have on display!

We would like to thank everyone who joined us or give a donation towards our coffee morning. A very special thanks to all the parents and children who helped out on the day and to all the families who baked and brought in tasty treats for the occasion. It was a very fun day for the staff and pupils of Ballyheerin NS (we got to wear yellow:-)) and all proceeds collected will go directly to the Niamh Toland Rehabilitation fund!

Thank you all so much for your support!

No Winter Blues here!

The senior class went for a lovely nature walk today where we compared how our local flora had changed or stayed the same since our nature walk in Autumn. You may see one of the posters which the senior class made to advertise our coffee morning which will next place in the school next Friday between 1pm-3pm in aid of Niamh Toland. We are looking forward to our annual book fair and to welcoming you all on Friday. We will be wearing yellow for Niamh on the day as it is her favourite colour! 🙂

Nature walk

We are delighted with the amount of Christmas shoe boxes which the families of our pupils have generously put together. The deadline for collection is now extended until 15th November 2019.

Halloween is here!

Ballyheerin NS got super spooky today for our annual Halloween show. Instead of the usual  pupils arriving this morning, we had a knight, a scary granny, a mermaid, a vending machine and a piñata to name but a few!

The senior class enjoyed front row seats at an exhibition of Ice age mammals recently which included the Irish elk, Irish wolf and even a mammoth! The lifesize re-enactments of the animals were fantastic and we able to answer all the questions we were asked! We even got to hold a real mammoth tooth!

Trip to Dunlewey

We all travelled to the adventure centre at Dunlewey for our school tour. We went on a really cool boat trip around the lake, even spotting a haunted house, and the Poisoned Glen church ruins of course. The children loved going up onto the top deck.

We also had a fantastic tour guide who brought us on a visit to an old cottage. He made it so interesting for the children, they were enthralled.

The children then had lots of fun on the pedal boats, kayaks, and the many many more activities there. They also enjoyed buying some souvenirs at the shop ! We will be back again.
